FAQ

Q  Will I need my own instrument?

A  I have two Yamaha clarinet and a Trevor James Classic Alto Saxophone available to hire. The hire price can always be taken as payment towards the instrument, should you wish to buy the instrument in the end. Hire costs for the instruments are £10 per month for the clarinet and £15 per month for the saxophone.

How much time will I need to practice each week?

I recommend 3 lots of 20 minutes as a minimum. Regular practice is more important than quantity though.

Can I just have one lesson to see how I get on?

Of course you can. It is important to be happy with not only the instrument you have chosen, but also the teacher before you commit to learning. Lessons can be booked on a week to week basis.

What make of reed do you recommend?

I always prefer Vandoren reeds, although there are many brands that may be suitable. Vandoren are not the cheapest make, but do be careful when deciding on cost alone. Some cheaper makes can be irregular in size and shaping making them unplayable.

Are you DRB checked?

Yes I am through three different routes of employment. I also undergo regular safeguarding training.

Can I sit in on my child's lesson?

Please do, if this is what you would prefer. There is space for one person to sit in. I often recommend this for younger students as it helps to give them confidence and then the adult can also supervise practice more effectively at home. I find that older students work better without an audience.

Do I have to take exams?

No, not if this is not what you would like. I do use two different exam boards, so there are a wide range of exams that you can take if you do change your mind.
